Many hosts will try to sell you web hosting package at ridiculous prices like $2.95/month. Before buying hosting from these companies try to find web pages hosted on that server and visit them. Check out how fast they load at different periods during the day. If you have a high speed connection try using a dial up connection: the majority of surfers still use dial up. If the page doesn't load quickly then most likely surfer will close the page before it has finished loading...(An ideal web page should be less than 100 kb for it to load quickly)

The reason I tell you this is that many companies offer cheap hosting on very slow servers. If you just want to make a personal web page for fun then I advise you to look for free hosting.

Beware also of hosting companies that offer you cheap plans with next to nothing in bandwidth. You may end up paying for extra bandwidth and it could add up pretty fast.
